Poland is a liberal democracy that adopts the parliamentary system of government. The President is the head of state and the Prime Minister, Head of Government. The government consists of the Council of Ministers (cabinet). It is for the President to appoint the government proposed by the Prime Minister, based on parliamentary majority (or coalition) of the lower house of parliament (the Sejm). The president is elected by direct vote every five years. Members of the Sejm is elected at least every four years by direct vote. 
The Polish parliament is made up of two chambers: the Senate, with a hundred chairs, and the Sejm, with 460 seats. The latter is elected by proportional representation. With the exception of ethnic minority parties, only the associations that exceed 5% of the national vote can have deputies in the Sejm. When in a joint session, the Sejm and Senate form the National Assembly (Zgromadzenie Narodowe), called when the president takes office, it is indicted by the State or is declared unfit because of his health. 
The judiciary includes the Supreme Court of Poland (Sąd Najwyższy), the Supreme Administrative Court, the Constitutional Court and the State Court. 
The current president is Bronisław Komorowski, successor to Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash on April 10, 2010 in the region of Smolensk airport in western Russia.
